Alaska Education Grant: residency, FAFSA, and how funds are prioritized

AEG awards $500–$4,000 a year to needy Alaska students at eligible in-state schools. One year of residency before FAFSA is required, and not every eligible applicant receives funds.

The Alaska Education Grant (AEG) is need-based aid administered by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE). Published awards range from $500 to $4,000 per academic year at approved institutions or training providers in Alaska. It is not automatic: ACPE prioritizes applications by financial need, prior-year recipient status, FAFSA filing date, and enrollment level.

Requirements include Alaska residency for at least 365 days before filing FAFSA, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, a high-school diploma or GED, an eligible undergraduate degree or vocational certificate, and at least half-time enrollment. You cannot already hold a bachelor’s degree and must maintain satisfactory academic progress under your school’s rules.

FAFSA is the application; select at least one eligible Alaska institution when filing. Submit a FAFSA every year even if you received AEG before. Your school certifies enrollment at the start of the academic year, and awards go to eligible applicants by need until funds run out. Prior eligibility or a previous award does not guarantee funding next year.

Before enrolling, verify that your provider appears on ACPE’s current list and ask financial aid how half-time status, funding order, and dropping credits affect eligibility. Then create an Alaska Student Aid Portal (ASAP) account to track status and usage. Budget tuition, fees, books, housing, and transportation separately: the maximum may not cover the full cost.

To begin, identify the program administrator and the financial-aid office that certifies your enrollment. Review the program profile and requirements; for an individual account, also use the responsible state agency. Before accepting funds, compare the award letter with an itemized campus budget.

Bottom line

File FAFSA early with an eligible Alaska institution and document 365 days of residency; priority order matters because funds are limited.
