Misfit Garden

Produce delivery service founded in Taupō, with seasonal fruit and vegetable boxes, flexible subscriptions, and a focus on surplus crops.

About Misfit Garden

An oversized carrot or a larger-than-expected harvest can fall outside ordinary sales channels. Misfit Garden builds its service around that produce: it asks growers what they have available and prepares seasonal fruit and vegetable boxes for New Zealand households. Shape and size take a back seat to using food that has already been grown.

Jen and Sofia found inspiration in European and South American markets, where they had seen stalls selling vegetables with less uniform appearances. Comparing that experience with New Zealand supermarkets, they started a stall at a local Taupō market. The project grew into a subscription service with a team handling selection, packing, delivery, and customer support.

Boxes bring together familiar produce and less common ingredients, according to the season and growers’ supply. Options include mixed fruit and vegetables, vegetables only, and fruit only, with different sizes. The service invites customers to adapt their cooking to a changing selection, a different approach from ordering the same items from a fixed list.

The subscription lets customers skip a delivery, switch boxes, or add products through their account portal. The weekly schedule uses a Monday evening order cutoff before organizing deliveries. The service covers the North and South Islands, including rural addresses, with delivery days depending on location.

Office fruit boxes and larger-volume formats add options for workplaces and other needs. Availability differs by location: the South Island launch focuses on regular boxes and does not yet include office boxes or bulk orders. Gift cards allow someone to give the service without choosing a box’s contents in advance.

The relationship with the food continues after delivery. A QR code on the Misfit Garden refrigerator magnet leads to storage advice and recipes. Parmesan-crusted Brussels sprouts, leek gratin, and parsnip gnocchi are among the ideas for using the selection. The recipe collection helps bring ingredients to the table that might not have been part of a customer’s usual shopping.

Surplus produce goes to Taupō food banks. On its own van routes through the central North Island, the team collects used boxes for reuse. Misfit Garden also works with growers and local hospitality customers. Its offering connects farming, delivery, and everyday cooking around a specific question: how to find a useful home for what the fields have already produced.
