Hobbiton Movie Set
Guided tours of the Shire setting on the Alexander farm, with hobbit homes, Bagshot Row, The Green Dragon Inn, and dining experiences.
About Hobbiton Movie Set
Hobbiton Movie Set preserves the Shire landscape featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies on the Alexander family’s farm. The location was chosen for Peter Jackson’s films within a 1,250-acre sheep and beef farm. The tour introduces that cinematic setting among hills and buildings that form part of Hobbiton’s familiar image.
Visits to the set are guided; it is not a site to explore independently. The movie set covers about twelve acres, roughly five hectares, within the farm. The experience follows the scenery and details of the hobbit homes, with explanations connecting the real location to its use in the films. The scale of the doors and gardens is part of the tour’s appeal.
Bagshot Row adds the opportunity to enter the interior of a hobbit home. That visit is included in the movie set tour experiences and takes visitors beyond the facades into a domestic space imagined for the Shire. The Green Dragon Inn is another part of the setting, alongside details that visitors recognize from the movies.
The main experience is advertised as lasting about two and a half hours. Other formats extend the visit with lunch, Second Breakfast, or an evening banquet, alongside Behind the Scenes, which explores other aspects of the set. The program distinguishes these experiences, so the visit’s duration and dining component depend on the option chosen.
The movie set’s own departure center is on Buckland Road in Hinuera, near Matamata. The offering also includes a format leaving from the Matamata information center and lasting about four hours. Reservations are made for a specific experience and time. Choosing a departure point helps organize transport and the day’s duration before reaching the farm.
Beyond regular tours, Hobbiton offers private group visits, celebrations, weddings, and gift vouchers. The combination of a working farm and a preserved movie set gives it a distinctive identity: the visit takes place in a rural landscape that was also developed for cinema. The experience focuses on discovering how hills in this part of New Zealand became one of those stories’ most recognizable locations.
