About Craggy Range Winery
Craggy Range Winery: family-owned winery in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
Craggy Range is a family-owned winery located at the foot of Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay, one of New Zealand's most recognized wine regions. The company presents itself as a producer of premium estate wines that seek to reflect the character and complexity of its terroir. Its activity is organized around its own vineyards, a winery with a cellar door, restaurant, boutique accommodation and wine tourism experiences at its Giants Estate headquarters.
Origin and family legacy
The winery was founded in 1998 by Terry and Mary Peabody, who since 1993 had sought to create a lasting legacy. After traveling through France, the United States and Australia, they chose New Zealand for its cool climate, its emerging wine industry and its agricultural tradition. The Peabody family established a 1,000-year family trust to guarantee a long-term perspective. According to the company itself, three generations of the family currently work in the business. The firm notes that it has even forgone entire vintages to maintain the quality of its wines.
Vineyards and regions
Craggy Range focuses its cultivation on two main regions: Hawke's Bay and Martinborough, and also makes wines with grapes from Marlborough. In Hawke's Bay it works the stony soils of Gimblett Gravels; in Martinborough, the Te Muna terraces. The company describes these sites as terroirs capable of producing wines that reflect their place of origin.
Ranges and wines
The catalog is organized into several ranges: Appellation, Estate, Prestige and Magnums. The Appellation range includes wines from Hawke's Bay and Martinborough, such as the 2026 Rosé from Hawke's Bay, the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc from Te Muna, the 2025 Chardonnay Kidnappers from Hawke's Bay, the 2025 Pinot Gris and the 2024 Riesling from Te Muna Road Vineyard, the 2024 Chardonnay, the 2024 Syrah and the 2024 Te Kahu from Gimblett Gravels Vineyard, and the 2025 Pinot Noir from Te Muna Road Vineyard. The Estate range is defined as single-vineyard wines, focused on complexity and the truest expression of the terroir. The Prestige collection is presented as the house's selection of iconic wines.
Launch of the 2024 Prestige Collection
The company announced the global release of the 2024 Prestige Collection for September 1, 2026. According to the winery, this vintage marks its 25th harvest and is the first guided by Chief Winemaker Ben Tombs. The firm cites Master of Wine Andrew Caillard, who describes the collection as a demonstration of the importance of custodianship, investment and succession, as well as the fidelity of the Gimblett Gravels and Martinborough vineyard sites.
Giants Estate: wine tourism, dining and accommodation
The main headquarters, Giants Estate, brings together winemaking activity with a cellar door for wine experiences, an award-winning restaurant, organic and biodynamic culinary gardens, and boutique accommodation. The accommodation offering includes The Lodge, described as spacious luxury accommodation, and cottages among the vines. The company also organizes private events, private dinners, corporate retreats and weddings. Its programming includes events such as Deep Purple Day. The site indicated a winter season promotion offering an extra night or a $150 dining experience at the restaurant.
Wine club and sales
Craggy Range sells its wines through its online store, with prices in New Zealand dollars, and through a wine club with two options: Prestige Wine Club and Wine Club. Prestige Wine Club members receive three curated selections of iconic wines throughout the year, exclusive member pricing and special offers across wines, restaurant experiences and boutique accommodation. The company also offers gift packs and gift cards, and has a portal for distributors and trade professionals.
Sustainability and governance
The winery states that it is governed by a 1,000-year family trust, which, according to its presentation, drives a long-term perspective and a motivation to cultivate with the future in mind. This governance structure is linked to its sustainability approach and to the continuity of the family project.
