About Meridian Energy
Meridian Energy, renewable electricity for homes, businesses and farms in New Zealand
Meridian Energy is a New Zealand power company that generates electricity from 100% renewable sources: wind, water and sun. The company presents itself as part of Aotearoa's decarbonisation process and the transition to a net-zero carbon future. Its activity is organised into three customer segments — home, business and farm — each with differentiated plans, pricing and customer service.
Home plans and supply
For residential customers, the catalogue includes several tariff options: the Freedom plan, the Night Saver plan, the Bach plan and the EV for home plan, as well as a residential solar energy option. The website allows you to compare plans and request a quote. Associated management services include billing and payments, moving house and adding a new property.
Solutions for businesses and farms
The business segment covers plans and pricing, sustainable business options, EV charging for business and commercial solar. The company also handles setting up new locations, removing or closing accounts, metering services and fault and outage support. For the farming sector, it offers plans and pricing, rural supplier offers and billing, metering and moving to a new farm services.
Electric mobility and solar energy
Meridian states it is building one of the country's largest EV charging networks, with over 200 charge points already rolled out across Aotearoa and more in the pipeline. It has a specific home and business charging plan for electric vehicle owners. In solar, the company offers a solar buy-back rate of 15 cents per kWh as standard and 24 cents per kWh during winter peak hours, available on all open term plans and subject to terms and conditions and eligibility criteria for residential customers.
Community and environmental commitment
The company channels part of its social activity through the Community Decarbonisation Fund, a fund that finances grassroots community projects across the country. Since its creation, the fund has invested nearly NZ$4.7 million in local communities, and up to $3 million is available for new projects this year, funded mainly by certified renewable energy customers. Applications open in mid-September.
Meridian is a principal partner of KidsCan, an organisation that provides practical assistance to children in need in schools across the country. It also collaborates with the Department of Conservation and with Ngāi Tahu on the Kākāpō Recovery Programme, aimed at the recovery of the kākāpō, an endangered species of which just over 200 individuals remain. The company is also driving the planting of 1.5 million trees in New Zealand to offset its carbon emissions.
Customer service and informative content
Meridian has a locally based customer service team and offers fault and emergency support 24 hours a day. The company also maintains a content section with energy-saving tips, advice for farms and comparisons between electric and hybrid vehicles.
