About BODY WORLDS Amsterdam

BODY WORLDS Amsterdam: real anatomy in the heart of Amsterdam

BODY WORLDS Amsterdam is a permanent exhibition located at Damrak 66, in the centre of Amsterdam. It is part of the series of exhibitions created by Dr Gunther von Hagens and is presented under the title The Happiness Project. The exhibition displays real human bodies that have undergone plastination, a process invented by von Hagens in 1977 at the University of Heidelberg to preserve tissue for scientific research and medical education.

What you can see at the exhibition

The tour displays 200 unique plastinates and is arranged over seven levels. Throughout them, it explores the relationship between everyday choices, happiness and health, and how mood can affect the body. The exhibition allows visitors to observe human anatomy and its functions from an unusual perspective, with real anatomical specimens preserved through plastination.

The ticket also includes a free InBody scan, as stated on the venue's own website.

Origin and history of the BODY WORLDS series

The original BODY WORLDS exhibition was a touring exhibition that has travelled to more than 100 cities in Europe, America, Africa and Asia. Since it began in 1995, around 40 million people have visited the human body exhibition. The Amsterdam venue is a permanent installation whose content has changed over the years: in the past it has covered themes such as health, sport, diet and animal anatomy, and it currently focuses on happiness and its effects on the human body.
