About Rubino

Rubino is tucked away at 53 Old Bakery Street, a short walk from Valletta's monumental centre. Its documented history begins in 1906 as a confectionery; today it combines Maltese and Italian dishes in a small dining room. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, but that label is no substitute for a practical decision: the menu changes, the room is intimate and the kitchen operates in short sittings. The sweet-shop past remains part of its identity, although lunch now revolves around a main course rather than a quick coffee.

The official menu lists fenek moqli, Maltese rabbit, braised lamb, pork fillets with honey and thyme, and fish according to the market. Some fish is priced at market value, so ask before ordering. The website lists lunch and dinner Monday to Friday, dinner only on Saturday and closure on Sunday. The number is +356 21 224 656. Given the room and schedule, a confirmed reservation makes more sense than arriving near the end of a sitting and expecting a table.

Reviews praise attentive service and explanations of the dishes, especially for guests trying rabbit for the first time. Some diners, however, find a particular preparation underwhelming for its price or report slow service when the room is full. That range is useful: Rubino is a deliberate meal, not a quick stop between monuments. If your co-cathedral visit ends on Saturday lunchtime or Sunday, the schedule rules out lunch here; Ta’ Nenu still runs sittings on those days.
