About Angama
Angama: high-end safaris in East Africa
Angama is a safari and lodging company operating in East Africa. Its name comes from Swahili and means 'suspended in mid-air'. The company presents itself as a project that combines safari experiences in unique locations with warm service and contemporary African design. Its offering is built around three properties: Angama Mara, Angama Amboseli and Angama Safari Camp.
Angama Mara: the flagship lodge
Angama Mara is the company's main property. It sits 1,000 feet above the valley, overlooking the Maasai Mara. Its Tented Suites are perched along the edge of the Great Rift Valley and feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering panoramic views. The lodge allows guests to explore the area's diverse wildlife and offers multiple activity options.
Angama Amboseli: intimacy in a private sanctuary
Angama Amboseli is an intimate lodge of just 10 suites, located in a private sanctuary. It is known for the density and diversity of its wildlife. It is set in a fever tree forest, with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. Some of the last 'Super Tusker' elephants live in this area.
Angama Safari Camp: immersion in the Great Migration
Angama Safari Camp is a low-impact tented camp that places guests in the midst of the Great Migration and the abundant wildlife of the Mara. It has a private staff of 13, including a camp host, butler, chef and two guides, plus two private vehicles. By staying inside the park, guests get two extra hours of game drives at times when the animals are most active, before sunrise and just after sunset.
Experiences and activities
The company offers a wide variety of experiences depending on the property. At Angama Mara and Angama Safari Camp, guests can enjoy hot-air balloon rides, game drives, walking safaris, Sundowner Boma visits, beading workshops with Maasai women, meals at The Shamba, a photographic studio and relaxation activities. At Angama Amboseli, game drives, walking safaris, hot-air balloon rides, visits to Amboseli National Park, relaxation, a photographic studio, a weaving workshop and collaboration with the Big Life Foundation are offered. Weddings, family celebrations, honeymoons and safaris inspired by 'Out of Africa' are also arranged.
Itineraries and sample stay
The company suggests a five-day itinerary that includes arrival at Angama Mara's private airstrip, game drives in the Mara Triangle, a sunrise hot-air balloon ride, a themed lunch recreating the scene from the film 'Out of Africa' at the filming location, and taking part in the beading workshop with Maasai women. There is also the option to combine stays in the Mara and Amboseli, as well as extensions to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater or gorilla trekking.
Rates and offers
The catalogue shows fully inclusive rates, per guest per night, with categories by season. For Angama Mara, the rate shown starts at USD 1,850 per person per night. Angama Amboseli has a single seasonal rate from USD 950 per person per night. Angama Safari Camp, accommodating up to eight guests in four en-suite tents, has a rate from USD 1,331 per person per night in peak season. Combination packages are offered, such as 'The Mountain & the Mara' of 7 nights from USD 1,857 per person per night, and a bonus night offer for long stays at Angama Mara at USD 1,331 per person per night.
Foundation and team
The Angama Foundation is funded by nightly contributions from guests and focuses on education, healthcare and conservation projects in the communities neighbouring each lodge. The founders, Steve and Nicky Fitzgerald, created Angama after more than 40 years dedicated to creating and operating safari lodges in Africa and India for &Beyond. The company highlights that its team is hired for attitude rather than skill, with particular emphasis on a vocation for service.
Access and location
Angama Mara and Angama Safari Camp are a 45-minute flight from Nairobi, with scheduled flights from Wilson Airport or private charters to Angama's airstrip. Angama Amboseli is also accessible via daily 45-minute flights from Nairobi or private charter.
