About CAFE LA RUCHE

CAFE LA RUCHE occupies a distinctive point on Yufuin’s walking route: it faces Lake Kinrin, the small body of water that anchors much of the town’s best-known scenery. It is more than a cafe with a view. The shop bakes its own bread and invites visitors to choose a freshly made item and a drink, then sit on the terrace or by the windows. Croissants are a house speciality, and the coffee is roasted on site.

The scene changes with the hour. On cold autumn and winter mornings, the contrast between the relatively warm water and the air can veil the lake in steam; later in the day, paths, trees and small shrines along the shore offer a different pace. The second floor operates as a gallery and shop, with changing exhibitions. For walkers circling the lake, it is a convenient place for breakfast or a break without leaving the route, although tables cannot be reserved and the terrace can fill during busy periods.

Public visitor comments often praise the outlook, croissants, sandwiches and cheesecake. Some reviews are less enthusiastic about the coffee, and visitors mention that the cafe and restrooms can feel crowded when tour groups arrive. That balance helps set expectations: the main draw is baked food beside the scenery, rather than a long meal or a reliably quiet cafe at every hour.

The official address is 1592-1 Yufuincho Kawakami, opposite the lake. It opens 9 am–4:30 pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday, with last orders at 4 pm; it closes Wednesdays and does not take table reservations. Cafe service continues on Thursdays, but bread is not sold that day. Lake Kinrin is about a 25-minute walk from Yufuin Station, so La Ruche works best as a stop near the end of the walk rather than an immediate breakfast after getting off the train.
