About The Sand Museum

Beside the dunes, The Sand Museum turns sand into temporary architecture. Each season brings together scenes and landmarks from a country or region; the current, 17th exhibition travels through Spain, with large-scale figures, fine relief work and details best appreciated by pausing at each display panel.

The museum is indoors, but the exhibition rooms are kept close to the outdoor temperature to protect the sculptures. That matters in both summer and winter, so suitable clothing affects how long you will feel comfortable inside. The main gate is open from 9 am to 6 pm, with last entry at 5:30 pm; the sub-gate has separate hours and accepts cashless payment only.

Visitors often praise the detail, the unusual concept and the contrast with the open landscape outside. Some also find the rooms hot or cold depending on the season. Follow the route and read the captions to understand the exhibition as a story rather than a sequence of photo backdrops.

The Spain exhibition is scheduled for 24 April 2026 to 3 January 2027 and the museum is open daily during that period, apart from exhibition changeovers. General admission is ¥800. Take a bus from Tottori Station to the dune area, then walk a few minutes; the interpretation centre makes a useful first stop before heading outdoors.

In brief
