About Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center

Before climbing the dunes, this centre offers a useful pause to understand the landscape. Its displays explain topography, geology, plants and wildlife, and the relationship between sand and local life. It does not replace the walk, but it helps visitors notice the patterns the wind draws across the surface.

The SUNAKURA dome film lasts about seven minutes and starts every twenty minutes. Free maps and route information, family space and a nursing room are also available. Wheelchairs for the centre and special models for moving over sand can be borrowed without a reservation, subject to availability.

Public feedback often praises the staff’s guidance and explanations, which help visitors who are unfamiliar with the area. Some travellers say that a few displays have limited English and that public transport can be confusing, so check the map and confirm the bus before setting out.

The centre opens year-round from 9 am to 5 pm and admission is free. The bus from Tottori Station to the dune area takes about twenty minutes; the centre is beside the main car park. Much of the route has no shade, so bring water, sun protection and footwear that can be cleaned of sand.
