About Kayaba Coffee

Kayaba Coffee helps explain Yanaka as a neighbourhood of low-rise homes, temples and long-standing shops. Its wooden building dates to 1916 and the coffee shop opened in 1938. It closed in 2006, but local preservation efforts helped bring it back in 2009. The history is part of the experience: the rooms retain details of an earlier kissaten while remaining closely tied to everyday neighbourhood life.

The menu combines coffee, other drinks and light meals. Best-known choices include an egg sandwich and Russian Coffee, which combines coffee with cocoa; the shop has also served breakfast and toast. It occupies two floors and retains a tatami room upstairs, reached by stairs. Its official booking service sets one order per person and a stay of up to 90 minutes, shortened to 60 minutes for a drink-and-cake-only order.

Customer feedback often praises the atmosphere, egg sandwich and character of the building, while also warning that the space is small and queues can form, especially at weekends. It is not ideal when you have a train connection or timed admission to catch. The official booking system accepts reservations until the previous day, which helps with planning but does not remove the need to allow time for the visit.

The address is 6-1-29 Yanaka, on a neighbourhood street best explored on foot; this is outside Ueno Park. Current listing hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 8 am to 6 pm. Read the booking conditions for seating duration and access to the tatami room. Instagram is linked from the official reservation service. Choose Kayaba for history and neighbourhood character; choose Suiren for a convenient break between museums.
