About Toba Aquarium
Toba Aquarium stands on the bay, a short walk from the station and opposite the approach to Mikimoto Pearl Island. It opened in 1955 and now arranges its exhibits across twelve zones without prescribing a single route: visitors can move according to their interests. That flexibility works well for families, but it also makes it useful to check the map and choose priority exhibits before wandering through the building.
The collection includes around 1,200 species. Dugongs, sea otters, walruses and other mammals share the spotlight with fish and freshwater creatures; the dugong is a particularly distinctive presence among Japanese aquariums. Feeding sessions and demonstrations run at different times, so visitors hoping to catch a specific activity should check the schedule on arrival. The facility has a restaurant, shop, Wi-Fi and lockers, and same-day re-entry is allowed with an exit stamp.
Public visitor comments praise the variety of animals and close views of otters, dugongs and scheduled demonstrations. They also mention queues around the most popular sea otters and crowded, noisy halls on busy days; some visitors raise concerns about the space in certain enclosures. A typical visit takes around two hours, while families following several activities may need longer. Arriving early and choosing a route can keep queues from shaping the whole visit.
Adult admission is ¥2,800, with reduced prices for children and free entry for those under three. Usual hours are 9:30 am–5 pm, with last admission an hour before closing, though opening may extend during summer and other peak periods. JR or Kintetsu Toba Station is about a ten-minute walk away. The aquarium and pearl island can be combined in one day: the official site lists a joint ticket for ¥4,000 per adult, compared with ¥4,450 separately, valid for one month from purchase.
A year-round aquarium with 12 exhibition zones, around 1,200 species and notable dugongs and sea otters.
