About Kondoi Beach
Kondoi is Taketomi’s best-known beach and a stop that changes the scale of a visit: after the village lanes, the coast opens into pale sand and shallow water. From the western shore, Iriomote, Kohama and Kuroshima can be seen on clear days. The local tourism association describes the sea as calm and shallow, but that is not a guarantee that swimming is safe; reef currents and dangerous marine life mean visitors should follow local signs and conditions.
The tide changes the scene. At high water, the beach offers room to swim and look out across the blue; at low tide, sandbanks appear and draw walkers and photographers toward the horizon. A sightseeing cart is not required to get there: the association says buses run from the port to the village and beach, while walking and bicycle rental are options from the village. Bring water and sun protection, and leave enough time to return to the pier before your ferry.
Public visitor comments repeatedly mention the clear water, sandy bottom and sense of space, with several advising travellers to check the tide table. Some visitors find little shade along the central stretch, while others point out trees near the ends; people also warn that crows may investigate bags or food. Keep food secured and take all rubbish away. This works best as a simple beach stop with realistic expectations, rather than a resort-style facility with extensive services.
The beach is on Taketomi, and the local tourism association lists +81 980-82-5445 for general enquiries. Its official page says the beach is about five minutes from the port by road; check bus departures on the day. There is no beach admission fee, but build your visit around the tide, weather and ferry schedule: a long afternoon by the water can become an awkward wait if you miss the final connection to Ishigaki.
White-sand beach on Taketomi’s west coast, with shallow water, views of neighbouring islands and bus access from the port.
