About Takachiho Amaterasu Railway
Amaterasu Railway turns part of a disused railway into a short scenic experience. Its open-air Super Cart covers about five kilometres on a roughly 30-minute round trip, passes through tunnels and stops on Takachiho Bridge, high above the valley. The former Takachiho line closed after typhoon damage in 2005; the tourist railway preserves part of its route as a ride, with commentary and simple effects in the tunnels.
Regular departures are listed on the official site between 9:40 am and 3:40 pm, but times can change for the season, inspections or weather. Seats on the regular train cannot be booked in advance: tickets are sold at Takachiho Station, so late arrivals may find the convenient departures sold out. The operator also lists an environmental maintenance fee in addition to the ride fare; check the current amount on its website before travelling. The scenic section over the bridge can be cancelled in strong winds.
Public feedback often mentions the bridge views, open-air ride and friendly staff; some visitors find the journey short for the price, while others warn that the cart has no roof or shade. It is a visual, family-friendly excursion, different from the boat: the gorge is viewed from a high railway structure rather than from the river. The strong rating belongs to the Takachiho railway attraction, not to the bridge alone or to the separate boat-rental reception.
The station is in the former Takachiho railway building and is about a ten-minute walk from the town centre, according to the local tourism guide. If combining it with the boat, try to secure a slot for the more limited experience first: boat reservations open two weeks ahead, while the train depends on same-day tickets. Leave a buffer between activities for local transport, queues and changing weather. The two rides show different sides of Takachiho: the valley from above and the waterfall from the water.
