About Karato Market
Beside the Kanmon Strait, Karato Market serves both as a working fish market and a food destination. It supplies professional buyers but also welcomes visitors drawn by local seafood and fugu. Its main tourist draw is Iki-iki Bakangai, a group of sushi and seafood stalls held on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, subject to the current calendar.
During the event, individual vendors offer different items: sushi made with the day’s catch, shellfish, fried foods and seasonal dishes. Customers buy from separate stalls and can eat in designated areas overlooking the strait. This is not a restaurant with one shared menu; the selection depends on the catch and on which vendors are operating. At other times, the market functions more like a wholesale operation, so a weekday visit may not resemble the weekend food event.
Visitors praise the freshness, broad choice and waterside setting; they also report intense crowds on Sunday and holiday mornings, queues at popular stalls and changes in availability from one day to another. Some people expect a complete traditional market and instead find a visitor-oriented food event. Arriving early can improve the selection, though it also means encountering the busiest period.
Shimonoseki’s official tourism guide recommends Karato for local seafood and says the area is about ten minutes by bus from Shimonoseki Station; the market is a short walk from the Karato stop. Check market hours and event hours separately: they are not interchangeable, and special dates can alter the schedule. It is the casual, varied choice for sampling seafood, while a formal fugu meal requires a separate restaurant reservation.
Public-facing wholesale fish market; its Iki-iki Bakangai event offers sushi and seafood to eat beside the Kanmon Strait.
