About Donburi Chaya Nijo Market

Donburi Chaya occupies a passage inside Nijo Market, a central market that began taking shape in the Meiji period when fishermen sold catches brought in from Ishikari Bay. The restaurant grew out of a fish shop and presents its menu as a direct way to taste Hokkaido seafood: salmon, sea urchin, crab, shrimp and mixed bowls that change with availability.

Its menu includes more than thirty kinds of donburi, from modest combinations to premium bowls. The restaurant says it offers choices for different budgets, although sea urchin and crab can raise the bill considerably. Public comments praise the fish, quick service and bowls that combine several ingredients. Other diners question the price, the size of some portions or the expectation that a meal must be exceptional simply because it is in a market. Comparing the menu and price before sitting down helps set realistic expectations.

The branch is at Minami 3-jo Higashi 1-7 inside New Nijo Market, near the Sosei River. In the warmer season it opens 7:30 am–5:00 pm; from November through April, it starts at 8:00 am and closes at 5:30 pm. Last orders are taken half an hour before closing. Reservations are not accepted and the restaurant closes on New Year’s Day; its site notes occasional additional closures. Bus Center-mae subway station is a short walk away. Arrive early if possible: shoppers and visitors make the market busiest in the morning.

Ohiso Honten, in the same market area, is a useful comparison: it also opens early, but the main branch closes on Wednesdays and serves dinner only Monday through Saturday. Its more-than-thirty bowls and hot dishes broaden the choice beyond donburi. Donburi Chaya is a straightforward seafood breakfast inside the market; Ohiso adds variety and, on some days, an evening service. Check seasonal prices and the final order time for the branch you choose.
