About Nishinomaru Garden at Osaka Castle

West of the main tower, Nishinomaru Garden offers an open stretch of lawn, pine trees and a direct view of the castle. Its roughly 6.4 hectares occupy part of the former western compound; more than 300 cherry trees make it one of the park’s most popular blossom spots, although the quiet disappears in spring and admission arrangements can change. The view of the tower framed by trees and stone walls is a good reason to treat the garden as a separate stop from the museum.

On ordinary days it is a spacious place to stroll and rest, with the historic Hoshoan tea house and features connected to the fortifications. During cherry-blossom season, evening illuminations extend opening hours and a special fee may apply. This is not a free public square: the operator lists regular admission at ¥300 from April 2026. The garden also has its own weekly and holiday closures, so do not assume it will be open whenever the tower is.

Visitors often praise the lawn, upkeep, generous space and photo compositions with the castle; some feel the fee is high for a short visit or find less to do outside blossom season. At peak bloom the scenery is attractive but busy with tour groups and temporary stalls. In quieter months, the views are easier to enjoy at a slower pace. Compared with the surrounding public park, the main differences are controlled entry, maintained lawns and a clear angle towards the tower.

The entrance is at 2 Osakajo, Chuo Ward; phone +81 6-6941-1717. Official hours are 9 am–5 pm from March to October and 9 am–4:30 pm from November to February; last entry is generally 30 minutes before closing. It closes Mondays, moving the closure to Tuesday when Monday is a public holiday, and December 28–January 4. Spring blossom operations have separate rules. From Otemon, walk across the park to the garden’s north gate; add that distance to your castle grounds visit.
