About Kasuga Ninai Jaya

Kasuga Ninai Jaya stands beside the entrance to the Manyo Botanical Garden, within the grounds of Kasuga Taisha. The teahouse recalls an older roadside scene: during the Edo period, vendors moved around the shrine carrying tea boxes and utensils on a pole. Today, the garden, tables and teacups make a pause part of the visit rather than a detour away from the shrine grounds.

Its most distinctly local dish is Manyo-gayu, rice porridge with seasonal greens. The menu also includes kakinoha-zushi, sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves, as well as tea, coffee and sweets. It works for a light meal or a break; travellers wanting a fuller lunch can pair the local dish with the accompaniments available that day.

Public feedback often highlights the garden, the quiet setting and the chance to taste a local preparation different from restaurants downtown. Comments also note that lunchtime can be busy and ordering takes place at a machine by the entrance; ask staff for help if the screen is unclear. The café is cash-only.

Kasuga Taisha lists hours of 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, with a 4 pm last order, and variable Monday closures; the shrine’s own page also publishes specific 2026 closure dates. It is about five minutes from the Kasuga Taisha Omotesando bus stop and roughly 22 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara. It is the more convenient choice when your visit continues toward the shrine and garden.
