About Oboke Gorge Pleasure Boat
The boat departs from a riverside base on the Yoshino River, where the mountains close in around the Oboke gorge. It moves beneath steep rock walls and green water; the visit focuses on crystalline schist formations shaped by erosion. This is neither a long cruise nor transport between towns: the ride lasts about half an hour and returns to the landing, making it a scenic pause within a day in western Tokushima.
Visitors tend to value the close view of the rock and water colour, as well as the crew and commentary; some find the ride short or point out that the experience depends heavily on river and weather conditions. Weekdays are usually quieter, while weekends and autumn foliage season can draw more people. Commentary is mainly in Japanese, although the operator and visitor feedback mention multilingual leaflets. Read them before boarding to identify the gorge’s landmarks.
The operator lists daily service from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the last departure at 4:30 pm. Published admission is ¥1,800 for adults and ¥900 for children aged three through elementary school; children under three ride free when accompanied. Rain, wind or river levels can suspend departures, so published hours do not guarantee a boat in adverse conditions. Check service before travelling, especially after heavy rain.
JR Oboke Station is about a 25-minute walk from the landing, or visitors can take a bus toward Oboke-kyo; the drive from Ikawa-Ikeda interchange takes around 30 minutes. Iya’s vine bridge is a road journey away, not a walk, so combine both only after checking bus timetables, limited frequency and the return trip. The boat offers a different perspective from the bridge: from the water, visitors look up at geological layers partly hidden from the road.
