About Sainokawara Open-Air Bath

Sainokawara’s outdoor bath extends a walk from Yubatake into a more open landscape, where steam rises among trees and volcanic rock. The facility covers about 500 square metres; under normal operation, bathing areas are separated for men and women. The walk from the centre takes about 12 minutes along a street lined with shops and small hot-spring features. The surrounding park is free to visit, but the bath has a separate admission charge.

The difference from an indoor ryokan bath is scale: sky, forest and the seasons become part of the experience. The water is highly acidic and hot, so it can feel intense even to visitors familiar with onsen. Do not bring soap, swimwear or a camera into the regular bathing area; follow Japanese bathing etiquette, wash before entering where wash stations are provided, and heed staff guidance. There are changing facilities, but visitors should not expect the range of products offered by a modern spa.

Public comments praise the size of the bath, natural surroundings and chance to soak outdoors in winter or under the stars. Others miss shower facilities or toiletries inside the bathing area, and some say the water can look cloudy because of naturally occurring minerals and algae. An individual comment about cleanliness is not a health inspection; the useful planning point is that this experience prioritises space, scenery and hot-spring water over a full set of modern spa amenities.

Official admission is ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children aged 3–12. Hours are 7 am–8 pm from April through November and 9 am–8 pm from December through March; last entry is 7:30 pm. Every Friday from 5:30–8 pm, the men’s bathing area is open for mixed bathing, and visitors may wear swimwear or cover themselves with a towel, according to the official information. Bring your own towel if you prefer not to buy one, and check current rules before walking up from Yubatake.
