About Hirome Market
In central Kochi, a short walk from the castle, Hirome Market brings dozens of food stalls, fishmongers, shops and small restaurants together under one roof. Its name recalls Shigeaki Hirome Fukao, a senior retainer of the former Tosa domain; the present market grew from a local effort to revitalise the area and its food culture. It is not a traditional wholesale market so much as a place to shop, eat and talk.
The format shapes the visit: diners order from different stalls and carry their food to shared tables. Joining a table with other people is common, so it helps to find a seat first and have someone hold it while the rest of the group orders. The official visitor guide says customers generally pay each stall separately and that credit cards are not widely accepted. There are more than 400 seats, but some aisles are narrow and lunch and dinner periods get busy.
The official tourism guide singles out katsuo no tataki, bonito seared over straw fire, as well as country-style sushi, aonori tempura, gyoza and other regional favourites. Public feedback praises the lively atmosphere and the chance to sample food from several vendors; the trade-off is noise, a scramble for seats at peak times and a less leisurely meal than in a conventional restaurant.
The market opens from morning until late, with an earlier start on Sundays; individual businesses keep different schedules and the whole complex closes on several dates each year. It is about a three-minute walk from Ohashidori tram stop; from JR Kochi Station, visitors can walk for roughly fifteen minutes or take the tram. It is the most flexible choice for a group that wants to try several local flavours, provided everyone is comfortable with communal seating.
