About Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan

Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan makes a street festival held on only a few days each year possible to explore in any season. The Kawagoe Festival, linked to Hikawa Shrine and documented from 1648, brings elaborately carved and decorated floats through the old town. The museum displays two authentic, full-size floats alongside objects, explanations and a large-screen film.

The exhibits invite visitors to look closely at the carpentry, decorative figures, music and neighbourhood organisation behind the matsuri. Visitors often praise the staff's enthusiasm and the chance to see the floats without festival crowds; others describe the exhibition as compact. A film helps explain how the floats move through town, and the museum says multilingual audio guides are available. It cannot replace the live celebration, but it gives useful context for the historic district outside.

The museum is at 2-1-10 Motomachi, close to Toki no Kane. It opens at 9:30 am, closing at 6:30 pm from April through September and 5:30 pm from October through March; last admission is 30 minutes before closing. It generally closes on the second and fourth Wednesday, as well as over New Year. Admission is ¥300 for adults and ¥100 for elementary and junior high students. It is an easy stop to pair with the bell tower, warehouse district and confectionery alley.
