About Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo

The Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo is a short walk from the shrine and adds the archaeological context that a visit to Izumo Taisha alone may not provide. Its galleries connect the shrine with the Izumo Fudoki, mythological accounts and regional discoveries. Standout objects include bronze swords from the Kojindani site and a reconstruction of the ancient shrine’s appearance. This is not a museum about one building alone; it is an introduction to Shimane’s past.

Institutional information describes galleries on Izumo Taisha, the ancient province of Izumo and its bronze objects, as well as an area devoted to mythology. Visitors mention English audio support, subtitled videos, family facilities and a café with a view. The museum is substantial, so avoid allowing only a few minutes between the shrine and your bus. For travellers interested in history, spending time here before or after worship changes how the objects and stories are understood.

The museum reopened after renovation on 1 October 2026, following a closure of about a year and a half for seismic reinforcement and facilities upgrades. The work updated exhibition panels, changed the mythology theatre and added presentations on Shimane festivals. Reviews written before reopening praise the layout, archaeological objects and staff; some visitors noted that not all gallery text was translated and that the museum deserves more time than expected.

The address is 99-4 Kizukihigashi in Taisha. It is about a seven-minute walk from Ichibata’s Izumo Taisha-mae Station and roughly two minutes from the Seimon-mae bus stop. The bus from JR Izumoshi takes about 25 minutes. Official hours after reopening are 9 am–6 pm, or 9 am–5 pm from November to February, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It closes on the first and third Tuesday each month. Special exhibitions require separate admission; check current fees before travelling. The garden and contemporary architecture are also part of the visit.
