About guntû (ガンツウ)
guntû, a Floating Hotel on the Seto Inland Sea
guntû is a small floating hotel that sails Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. Its name comes from the Bingo regional dialect for a small crab that lives in those waters. Its itineraries extend from the western area off the coast of Kaminoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture to the east near Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, traveling in both directions.
Design and Architecture
The silver-colored hull reflects the tones of the sun and sea and was designed by architect Yasushi Horibe. Born in Yokohama in 1967, Horibe graduated from the University of Tsukuba and founded his own studio in 1994. His awards include the 2002 Yoshio Prize for Ushiku Gallery and the 2016 Architectural Institute of Japan Award for Chikurinji Ossuary. He has written several books, including a monograph on guntû.
Cabins and Spaces Onboard
The vessel has 17 cabins, all with terraces. Onboard spaces include an open deck, café and bar, dining room, lounge, bathing area with a hinoki cypress tub and sauna, a sushi counter overlooking the sea, a shop, and an entrance hall. The dining room follows an “order what and as much as you like” concept. Soft light filters into the lounge through sliding paper doors.
The Onboard Experience
The floating hotel is designed for guests to enjoy the passage of time at an easy pace, surrounded by the changing seascape of the Seto Inland Sea through the seasons. The experience is described as a singular, unhurried journey.
