About Hakone Ropeway Owakudani Station

Hakone’s ropeway is more than a transfer between mountains: from the cabin, visitors see vegetation give way to the volcanic terrain of Owakudani. The line links Sounzan with Togendai and stops at Owakudani and Ubako; the valley opens beneath the gondolas, and clear days can bring views of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji. It connects with the Hakone Tozan Cable Car and boats departing from Togendai, making it a natural centrepiece for a one-day circuit.

The experience depends on both visibility and operations. The operator publishes seasonal hours and warns that service can stop for wind, inspection or other conditions; the volcanic area also has specific safety controls. Passengers often praise the views, smooth gondolas and chance to pass above steaming vents, while others mention queues, maintenance changes or Fuji hidden by cloud. Treat the ropeway as one part of the route, rather than a guarantee of a clear panorama.

Owakudani Station is in Sengokuhara, Hakone. Boarding is listed from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm between February and November, and until 4:15 pm in December and January; final departures vary by station. The full Sounzan–Togendai journey takes roughly half an hour, before queues or stops. The Hakone Freepass covers rides on the line, but confirm the terms of the pass you buy. Bring a warm layer in winter: altitude and wind can make the cabins and platforms feel cold.

To continue towards the lake, get off at Togendai and board a sightseeing vessel on Lake Ashi. The boat offers a seated pause and water-level views; the ropeway reveals the terrain and Owakudani. A practical route is Gora–Sounzan–Owakudani–Togendai, followed by a boat towards Moto-Hakone, but the best direction depends on traffic and timetables. Check both services before setting out, allow time for queues and avoid relying on the day’s last boat for a tight connection.

In brief
