About Ginzan-so
Ginzan-so occupies a different position from the ryokan lining the heart of the historic street: it stands near the entrance to the hot-spring district, beside the river and facing the mountains. It is larger than many inns in the old centre, with spacious Japanese-style rooms and some updated designs. That scale can suit travellers who want more services within the property and a setting slightly removed from the flow of day visitors walking the street.
The outdoor bath is one of its main draws. The inn describes a broad rotenburo, along with bathing areas where guests can soak standing or reclining, with views over the valley and river. This is not the private-bath arrangement offered by Fujiya: Ginzan-so’s experience centres on the property’s communal hot-spring facilities, so check rules, hours and any private-bath options when choosing a room. Japanese meals feature Yamagata ingredients according to the season, while the exact menu depends on the date and rate booked.
Guest feedback often praises room size, bath scenery and service; less positive comments mention value for money, futon comfort or the handling of dietary requests. The walk to the main street takes only several minutes and offers a quieter setting, although the slope can be slippery in snow or ice. Travellers with limited mobility should ask in advance about routes between their room, the baths and the historic district.
The ryokan offers pickups from Oishida Station by prior arrangement; its transport page still displays old timetable details, so do not rely on those without direct confirmation. Parking is outside the hot-spring street, with a shuttle vehicle for the final approach. In winter, roads and pedestrian access may be affected by snow, closures and seasonal controls; ask about tyres, chains, luggage transfer and current driving rules before setting out.
