Atami Ropeway

Atami Ropeway departs beside the Atami-korakuen area and climbs to Mount Hachimanyama in a few minutes. It is not a long mountain journey; its value lies in bypassing the slope between the port and the summit, opening views over the bay and leaving visitors a short walk from Atami Castle and other hilltop attractions. The ascent also makes a visual pause in a hot-spring town of steep streets and seafront promenades.

From the upper station, visitors can reach the Umi Sora terrace and Aijō Cape, as well as the attractions on the hill. The ride takes about three minutes, and cabins carry passengers in groups, so waits can vary with demand. Return tickets cost ¥900, with a one-way option also available. Admission to the castle and nearby museums is separate unless a specific combination ticket is chosen.

Public comments mix enthusiasm for the scenery with reservations about the infrastructure. The short ride and views are often appreciated; other visitors mention dated facilities, queues on busy days or that the experience feels brief for the fare. It works best as part of a route that includes the terrace, castle or waterfront, rather than as a standalone up-and-down trip.

The lower station is opposite Atami-korakuen, about ten minutes by bus from Atami Station. The tourism association lists access from the Atami-korakuen bus stop and from the Atami Castle stop, about a three-minute walk from the upper station. Regular service is roughly 9:30 am–5:30 pm, with the last ascent at 5 pm; maintenance or poor weather can interrupt operations. Check the official notice before planning connections.
