About Asamushi Aquarium

Asamushi Aquarium brings the marine life of northern Honshu into a visit that can fill much of a morning, yet still works as a day trip from Aomori. Its “Mutsu Bay Sea” tunnel tank lets visitors walk beneath local fish and see the aquarium from another angle; nearby exhibits cover coastal species, jellyfish, penguins, seals and other animals. The venue also schedules dolphin performances. They are popular with families, so check the exact time before arranging the rest of the visit.

The difference between a rushed stop and a well-paced outing is timing. The aquarium is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with last admission at 4:30 pm, and its official directions place it about a 12-minute walk from Asamushi-Onsen Station. The pedestrian approach leads from the road into a mostly indoor visit, useful when coastal weather changes. Visitor comments often mention close views of the animals, the tunnel, performances and the local exhibits; some note that show times and visitor numbers affect how much can be seen in an afternoon.

To extend the outing, Yu-sa Asamushi roadside station sits beside the train station and combines a local-produce market, ice-cream counter and souvenir shop. The official site currently lists its fifth-floor panoramic bath as temporarily closed from 19 August 2026 because of equipment failure; do not plan around the usual bath hours shown elsewhere on the site. The market runs from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, while the souvenir shop is open 9:00 am–7:00 pm, closing at 6:00 pm from December through March, according to the current facility information.

The simplest car-free route is to take Aoimori Railway to Asamushi-Onsen, visit the aquarium first and return towards the station for regional goods at Yu-sa. Allow two to three hours for the exhibits and leave room for the performance you want to see; then decide whether there is time for the shore or fishing park. From Aomori Station, check the line’s ticket and timetable before leaving: this is a separate rail journey from getting around the city centre. With Yu-sa’s bath unavailable, plan the outing as aquarium, shoreline and market rather than a public-bath circuit.
