About Orvieto Underground

Beneath Orvieto’s streets lie cavities that residents excavated and reused for centuries. Orvieto Underground does not claim to show the whole network. A guide leads visitors through a section open to the public and explains how the rock served different needs and trades, from water collection to storage, oil pressing and pigeon breeding. The tour leaves from Piazza del Duomo 23, a few steps from the cathedral façade, and offers a perspective the surface streets cannot provide.

The regional tourism guide describes remains of an old olive press, cisterns from several periods and medieval pigeon lofts cut into the tuff. Google reviews displayed by Wanderlog value a guide who gives the rooms and their chronology meaning; some mention narrow passages or stairs and recommend booking a place. One aggregator labels the attraction “free admission”, but the operator clearly lists a €10 ticket. Use the operator’s price for planning, not that automated label. This is also a different visit from Pozzo di San Patrizio at the other end of the centre.

Operator Speleotecnica advertises four regular daily departures—11 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.—closure on December 25 and booking strongly advised in summer. Its reduced ticket was €8 for students, older visitors and larger groups. The guided route takes about an hour according to the operator, although an older description put it at roughly 45 minutes; leave some margin if combining it with the cathedral or well. Confirm the language and mobility conditions before booking: a guide does not remove underground passages and stairs.
