About Reschio

Reschio, a private estate between Umbria and Tuscany

Reschio is a 3,700-acre private estate in the Umbrian hills, organised around a thousand-year-old castle and a collection of more than fifty farmhouses. The property belongs to the Bolza family, who live there, design it and manage it directly. The project has been developing since the mid-1980s, when the family, of Austro-Hungarian origin, settled in Italy and began restoring ruins that over time became a personal project intertwining architecture, design and family life.

Accommodation: hotel and villas to rent

The estate offers three main ways to stay: hotel rooms, villas to rent and table reservations at its restaurants. The villas often originate from restored and transformed farmhouses; the estate itself notes that the process of buying a house may begin with a ruin or, increasingly, with a house already brought to life.

In-house architecture and design

Benedikt Bolza's architecture and design studio has accumulated over thirty years of in-house work on the estate. That work takes shape in buildings imagined, built and managed by the family itself. The estate describes its identity as a distinct DNA, rooted in responsibility, aesthetics and innovation, with the idea of giving back to the land what it sustains.

Dining and local produce

Reschio's bars and restaurants draw on what is foraged on the estate, picked in its gardens and grown nearby, with a seasonal approach. Among the dining venues are Ristorante al Castello and Ristorante Alle Scuderie. The estate also maintains a kitchen garden managed on biodynamic principles, which guides sowing, planting and harvesting according to lunar and planetary cycles.

Bathhouse, sport and activities

The wellness and activity offering includes bathhouse rituals, lake days, yoga, riding, tennis, gym and biking, among other options. The estate also organises three-day workshops and a calendar of events that has included dinners, musical gatherings and an inter-house tournament, as well as tastings and activities around the vine.

Collections and shop

Reschio brings together a collection of objects created on the estate and crafted with kindred artisans, available through its online shop. The estate states that its designs and products are protected by registered trademark.

History and ownership structure

The name Reschio is associated with Resculum, the Latin name for fortification, and construction of the present castle began around the year 900. A figurine found on the estate's upper slopes points to an earlier Etruscan presence. In 1355 the property came under the direct influence of the Holy Roman Empire, becoming an independent fiefdom between the warring factions of Umbria and Tuscany. Over the centuries it passed through various families, including the Marchesi del Monte Santa Maria, the Bichi Ruspoli of Siena — who built the area's elementary school — and the Cenciarini. In the 18th century, Cardinal Lorenzo Corsini was elected pope as Clemente XII in 1730 and granted the title of Conte di Reschio to the son of his niece, who was married to a member of the Bichi Ruspoli. In 2000, Nencia Corsini married Benedikt Bolza. The estate is registered as Reschio srl, with share capital of €3,500,000 fully paid, and registered with the Chamber of Commerce of Perugia under number PG-287943.
