About National Car Testing Service (NCTS)

National Car Testing Service: compulsory vehicle inspection in Ireland

The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) is Ireland's compulsory vehicle inspection programme. Its primary aim, under EU Directive 2014/45, is to improve road safety and contribute to environmental protection by reducing harmful vehicle emissions on Irish roads.

The service is operated by Applus+ Inspection Services Ireland Limited on behalf of the Road Safety Authority (RSA). According to the organisation itself, it is the only nationwide provider of this service and operates completely independently of the motor industry, without carrying out garage repair or maintenance activities.

Regulatory framework and scope of the programme

The NCT is governed by S.I. Regulations 4/2023 — Road Traffic (National Car Test) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 — and by the aforementioned EU Directive 2014/45. The organisation is accredited to ISO 17020 for the conduct of the NCT.

The programme covers vehicle inspection throughout Ireland. The website allows you to check the validity of any NCT certificate issued, as well as the expiry date and next test due date for each vehicle.

Centre network and operational capacity

The organisation has over 50 locations across Ireland and employs over 800 people. According to data published by the organisation itself, its 600+ NCT inspectors are qualified vehicle mechanics and the service carries out over two million tests per year.

Centres are audited both internally and independently over 4,000 times each year. The technology installed on the test lanes compares each test result with the previous ten to verify that each piece of test equipment is operating correctly.

Booking and online management

The website presents itself as the only official channel for booking and managing NCT appointments. Over 60% of bookings are now made online. When there is no online availability for a suitable date, the booking process allows you to join a priority list; alternatively, the NCTS call centre assists those looking for an earlier appointment.

Available services include checking your NCT expiry date, checking certificate validity, the pre-test check list, FAQs and resources aimed at passing the test.

Statistics and transparency

The site publishes annual statistics broken down by test centre, vehicle manufacturer, fuel type and booking lead times. It also includes complaints and appeals procedures, as well as the Customer Charter.

Independence, ethics and employment

The organisation stresses that impartiality, independence and integrity are the cornerstones of its code of ethics, and it has an anti-corruption policy and an online ethics and compliance channel for reporting possible irregularities. On employment matters, it publishes a gender pay gap report with data from June 2024 to June 2025, 2023 and 2022, and notes that opportunities may exist in roles such as vehicle inspector, customer care agent and call centre booking agent.
