GoCar
Irish app-based car and van sharing with vehicles returned to their pickup base.
About GoCar
GoCar changes the usual question about city transportation: instead of owning a car for occasional trips, people can reserve one for the time they need. The Irish car-sharing service operates through an app and places cars and vans at different bases. It can serve a major shopping trip, meeting, move, or excursion, with vehicle choices suited to different needs.
The published process begins by creating an account. A member then finds a GoBase, books a vehicle, and opens it through the app. The keys are collected from the indicated compartment inside the car. At the end of the trip, the user returns the vehicle to the same pickup point to close the rental. This is a round-trip system, not a free-floating drop-off on any street.
The search tool filters by location and vehicle type. Options include city cars, models for longer trips, automatics, electric vehicles, seven-seaters, and cargo vans. A van for moving furniture serves a different purpose from a small car for groceries. Availability depends on the base and time selected, making the actual pickup location the first thing to check.
GoCar advertises hourly rates and terms for included mileage, with additional charges depending on the plan. It also says fuel, tax, and insurance are included in the service. These statements describe the general model; the final cost depends on vehicle class, duration, distance, and current booking terms. The advertised starting rate is not the price of every trip.
There is a separate route for business users. Access to a shared vehicle may avoid maintaining a company car for infrequent work journeys, but the business still has to plan who will drive, what cargo will be carried, and when the vehicle must return. The app and help pages explain the booking process and driver requirements.
GoCar has bases in various Irish towns and cities. Each car's pickup point is the GoBase shown on the app's map when booking, and the trip ends at that same base under the service terms. For someone arriving in an unfamiliar place, checking that location before booking matters as much as choosing the type of car.
GoCar is most useful when a particular trip is compared with the obligations of owning a car that sits idle for much of the week. For shopping, an appointment, or a short outing, choosing a vehicle size and booking by the hour may be practical. The plan works when the driver understands the return to the same base and estimates time and mileage before leaving.
