About Martin's Bräu Freiburg

Martin's Bräu operates by Martinstor at 237 Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, beneath the Markthalle area. The company dates its brewing to 1989 and combines large tables, an open kitchen and a summer terrace. From the cathedral, you can walk through the centre to the old gate, making the venue a natural end to a stroll rather than a return to the immediate Münster surroundings.

The brewery makes its own beers and introduces a seasonal creation each month; the calendar changes, so one variety cannot be promised for every visit. The current menu includes Baden dishes such as Maultaschen, Knöpfle, pork knuckle and Schäufele, alongside vegetarian alternatives. Official hours are 11:00–23:00 Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Larger groups are encouraged to book and choose dishes beforehand, though an individual visit need not follow that format.

Many diners single out the beer, portions and staff; others find the hall noisy or a particular dish less successful. Its central popularity can mean a wait, particularly at weekends. The appeal is an urban brewery where the drink and local cooking carry equal weight. If drinking beneath chestnut trees is the priority, Feierling's garden is the better fit when it is open for the season.
