About Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
MAMCS opened in 1998 in a large, light-filled building beside the River Ill and within walking distance of the railway station. Its collection spans from 1870 to the present and includes painting, sculpture, photography and video, with artists ranging from Monet, Rodin and Picasso to Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Niki de Saint-Phalle and Nam June Paik. Its broad collection and changing exhibitions make for a different visit from a museum focused on local history.
The museum lists standard admission at €9 and a reduced rate of €5; admission includes temporary exhibitions. It is open Tuesday to Sunday: 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 2–6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and 10 a.m.–6 p.m. at weekends. The last ticket is issued at 5:30 p.m. Facilities include a lift, baby-changing area, pushchair loans and a café. They help with planning, although the time needed depends on the exhibition and how closely you want to look.
Take tram B or F to Musée d’Art Moderne; bus 4 or 10 stops at Art Moderne. The museum is also a walk from the central station, but allow at least two hours for the galleries and temporary shows. On a rainy day, it can anchor a longer indoor afternoon. Check the city’s calendar: on October 7, 2026, for example, the museum had an exceptional afternoon-only schedule.
