About OOBU
OOBU occupies Bassin talo, a house designed by Charles Bassi on the Aura waterfront, and places Finnish cooking at the centre of the experience. The restaurant opened in 2020 on the building’s second and third floors; the house dates from 1829 and pairs a historic address with a contemporary dining room. It is a short distance from Mami, making it possible to compare two approaches to fish and archipelago flavours without changing neighbourhoods.
The kitchen builds its menu around Finnish fish, lamb and vegetables; it says everything is made from scratch and that fish is smoked on site. Dishes are always offered gluten-free and lactose-free, and the team can serve guests in Finnish, Swedish and English. Lunch runs Tuesday to Friday, with dinner service Tuesday to Saturday. The dining room is upstairs, a practical detail for visitors who need to avoid stairs.
Public comments often celebrate the quality and presentation of the fish, the friendly staff and the atmosphere of the building; some diners say the room can feel noisy when busy and that the quality or pace of service is not always consistent. The restaurant also publishes guest testimonials and a TableOnline score on its own website; that is a separate platform.
From the door, the Aura promenade leads towards the medieval castle in one direction and the cathedral and old town in the other. OOBU is not an all-day drop-in: it is closed Sunday and Monday, and lunch has a defined service window. It suits a slower meal centred on Finnish ingredients and house techniques; Mami is the more informal bistro alternative on the same stretch of river.
