KARHU

KARHU's story begins in Helsinki in 1916, in a small workshop that made skis, javelins, and discs from Finnish birch. The company was then called Ab Sportartiklar Oy; in 1920 it adopted KARHU, the Finnish word for “bear.”

From those Nordic sporting roots grew a brand that now organizes its catalog around two related areas: everyday sneakers and technical running footwear.

The lifestyle line includes silhouettes such as the Fusion 2.0, Legacy 96, Aria 95, and Albatross 82, along with newer versions and collaborations. The running section features models such as the Ikoni, Mestari Run, and Ikoni ATR, plus options for trails and mixed surfaces. The online store groups collections by activity and audience and adds apparel including T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, pants, shorts, socks, caps, and beanies.

Fit and stride-transition technology play a central role in the running lineup. KARHU explains that Ortix Fit is based on midsole geometry, upper volume, and last measurements; its variations include HiVo, a higher-volume fit, and HeraFit, developed for the female foot. Fulcrum is the brand's system for guiding movement from landing through toe-off while balancing cushioning and support. These are design technologies that distinguish the training-shoe families, not a promise of identical performance for every runner.

The brand's history also left recognizable marks. KARHU says Finnish athletes wore its shoes in Olympic competition and that in 1952 it sold the three-stripe trademark it had used on its footwear; the M symbol seen on current models stands for “Mestari,” Finnish for “champion.” That connection between sporting archives and current design appears throughout a catalog where retro-inspired models sit alongside contemporary trainers.
