Jail Hill Inn

Jail Hill Inn occupies Galena's former Jo Daviess County Jail at 319 Meeker St, a four-story brick building dating to the late 1870s. The jail remained in use for roughly a century before being transformed into an intimate luxury inn. Its location is slightly removed from the busiest blocks of Main Street but still close enough to walk downtown, giving guests a quieter base with a direct connection to Galena's history.

The property has only six suites, each unusually large for a bed-and-breakfast and designed more like a private apartment than a conventional hotel room. Depending on the suite, features can include gas fireplaces, sitting areas, mini refrigerators, microwaves, Keurig coffee makers and spa-oriented bathrooms. Historic traces of the building have been preserved in selected spaces, including original floors and jail-era markings.

Food is a major part of the stay. Guests receive a three-course breakfast in the morning, while the afternoon hospitality program typically includes a tray with cheeses, charcuterie, fruit, appetizers, house-made cookies and a bottle of wine or a non-alcoholic alternative. The inn also has lounge and outdoor areas for relaxing between visits to downtown Galena.

Jail Hill Inn is best suited to couples and adult travelers looking for a special-occasion stay rather than a standard hotel. The historic four-story structure has no elevator, so guests with mobility concerns should discuss room placement before booking.
