About Onhwa' Lumina
Onhwa' Lumina: an immersive night walk through Huron-Wendat culture
Onhwa' Lumina is a nighttime multimedia experience held in Wendake, near Quebec City. The 1.2-kilometre route combines light, sound and video projections to immerse visitors in the culture and way of life of the Wendat Nation. The experience is presented as a collective adventure that links the founding myth to a vision of the future.
The route: from the Great Circle to the stars
The itinerary begins in the Great Circle and moves through various symbolic stations. Along the way, the Wendat language comes to life through stories told in light and songs that accompany every step. Visitors cross the back of the Turtle, circle the heart of a traditional longhouse, travel through the village and reach the stars.
The stages of the route are built around concepts from the Huron-Wendat worldview:
- The circle (Kwaweyih): we are all united. The Great Circle represents a circular understanding of the world in which all beings are equal and interdependent.
- The turtle (Yändia'wich): Turtle Island is the traditional name the Huron-Wendat give to North America. According to the Wendat creation myth, a piece of earth fallen from the sky is retrieved from the depths by grandmother Toad and spread upon the back of the Great Turtle, forming an island where Yäa'tayenhtsihk could live after falling from the Sky World to the Water World.
- The longhouse (Yänonhchia'): visitors take their place around the fire, at the heart of daily activities, and discover the mysteries of the night.
- The village (Yändata'): the scale of the village, the richness of alliances and the honour of the warriors are revealed.
- Our world (Onyionhwentsa'): immersion in the surrounding environment, the beauty and the generosity of the land.
- The ancestors (Hatiyöndahskehen'): a look toward those who paved the way, gave life and passed on knowledge.
- The stars (Tihchion'): beneath a shower of starlight, hope for the world is reawakened.
