About Cape Bear Lighthouse & Marconi Station

Cape Bear Lighthouse & Marconi Station: a historic lighthouse on the southeast coast of Prince Edward Island

Cape Bear Lighthouse & Marconi Station is a historic site located on the southeast coast of Prince Edward Island (Canada), about 25 km from the Wood Islands Ferry. The lighthouse, established in 1881, is still in operation and its light is visible for up to 22 km (14 miles). From the site, the Northumberland Strait and Nova Scotia can be seen.

The site is managed by Cape Bear Lighthouse & Marconi Station Inc., a non-profit organization whose ownership was transferred from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Its mission is focused on preserving, celebrating and sharing this place with Islanders and visitors from around the world, with the support of a community of volunteers.

What to see and do at the lighthouse

Visitors can climb to the lantern room to take in a panoramic view of cliffs, beaches, fishing boats and marine life. The site includes exhibits that recreate the past life of the Cape Bear area and show the unique connection of the Cape Bear Marconi Station to the RMS Titanic disaster.

There is also a shop, Signal Shop, with crafts made by local artisans, and picnic tables on site for those who wish to bring their own food.

Heritage recognition

The lighthouse is a Designated Heritage Place, recognized at the federal level by Parks Canada and at the provincial level by the Government of Prince Edward Island.

Setting and access

The lighthouse is located on the Points East Coastal Drive, marked with starfish signs, which connects to about 50 beaches and local attractions in Murray Harbour, Murray River and surrounding areas.

Management and support

The organization is led by a board of directors whose members are volunteers who donate their time and expertise. The board includes Valerie MacPherson as president, Shay Darrach as vice president of operations, Charlie MacNeill as vice president, Elizabeth Davis as treasurer and the secretary position vacant, along with directors Lorin Brehaut, Bruce MacNeill and Dawna MacNeill. Donations are accepted to support its mission, with tax receipts available through Canada Helps.

The organization acknowledges that it works and lives on Epekwitk, the traditional, ancestral and contemporary lands of the Mi'kmaq people, covered by the historic Treaties of Peace and Friendship.
