About Café Tomaselli
Café Tomaselli occupies a corner of Alter Markt, the small square in Salzburg’s old town reached after coming down from Hohensalzburg Fortress. The Tomaselli family has run it for more than 150 years, and the place preserves the setting of an Austrian coffee house: marble tables, wood panelling and a cake waitress. The tourism office traces a tradition of more than three centuries. The value of stopping is more than caffeine; it is a chance to sit in a city institution after a route of ramparts and museums.
The menu offers melange and Einspänner coffee, apple and curd-cheese strudel, Esterházy and Dobos cakes, and egg dishes. The terrace brings in the square when weather permits, while the indoor rooms sustain the classic coffee-house mood. It opens from seven Monday to Saturday and eight on Sundays, closing at seven in the evening. The business says it does not accept reservations for individual tables. Its number is +43 662 8444880. Anyone leaving the fortress late should account for closing time before heading towards Alter Markt.
Visitors’ accounts describe the room’s charm, the pastries and the pleasure of watching the square from a table. Complaints about waits, high bills or uneven service when the café fills up also recur. That contrast matters: a long history does not guarantee speed. With time for a table and conversation, Tomaselli fits the route; if the aim is to buy an original Mozartkugel and keep walking, neighbouring Fürst is a better match.
