About Wallsend Vet Newcastle

Veterinary Clinic in Wallsend, Newcastle

Wallsend Vet Newcastle is a veterinary hospital located in the Wallsend neighbourhood of Newcastle (New South Wales, Australia). It treats a wide variety of species: dogs, cats, pocket pets, some species of farm animals and numerous sporting and eventing dogs.

The centre presents itself as a team dedicated to providing personal, exemplary care to any animal that comes through the door. Its work is organised around preventive medicine, diagnostics, surgery and advice for owners.

History and Background

The practice was opened in 1977 by Dr John Hayes, who provided care to the companion animals of the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region. The building, which was originally Dr Hayes' family home, was extended and converted into the current veterinary hospital.

In October 2012, Dr Hayes transferred ownership to Dr David Larratt, who served as principal surgeon and introduced new techniques. Wallsend Vet is currently owned by Vet Partners.

Areas of Specialisation

The clinic highlights four distinguishing features:

  • A Canine Lameness Centre with advanced investigation and surgical options for injured or lame dogs.
  • A Feline Health Centre, separate from the dog area, where cats are treated with special care.
  • In-house pathology, digital x-ray and ultrasound, which allow the cause of the pet's ailment to be identified straight away.
  • A focus on team building and working with all clients to maintain their pets' health.

Veterinary Services

The service catalogue includes general medicine, health checks, nurse consults, internal and external parasite control, senior pet care, dentistry, in-house blood tests, orthopaedic surgery, pet cancer care, dental surgery, soft tissue surgery, specialist vet referrals, ultrasounds and weight loss.

In the area of pet wellbeing, the clinic offers effective flea control, microchipping, new kitten and new puppy care, vaccination, prescription food and diet, and puppy school. The clinic also has an emergency service and the Best for Pet programme.

Diagnostics and Surgical Capability

The hospital has an in-house pathology laboratory and advanced diagnostic equipment that allows fast and accurate results. Treatment options include orthopaedic and dental surgery, as well as diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Professional Team

The team consists of veterinarian Dr Angela Brady, practice manager Trudy, senior vet nurse Lianne and vet nurses Janette, Laurie and Chloe.

The clinic runs puppy preschool classes on multiple weeknights, with the aim of helping owners navigate puppy parenthood and develop good manners in their animals. It also publishes pet care advice, with topics such as puppy and kitten best start, senior pets, senior check-ups, pet age calculator, parasites, kitten socialisation, dental care and kitten nutrition.
