About Pumphouse Point
Pumphouse Point, boutique accommodation on Lake St Clair
Pumphouse Point is an adults-only boutique retreat located in the heart of Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area, in the Central Highlands region, on the shores of Lake St Clair. It occupies a restored former industrial site and presents itself as a small-scale property whose uniqueness lies in its location and the Tasmanian experience it offers, rather than in a conventional luxury offering.
The property has eighteen rooms spread across two heritage buildings. It is described as a place to reflect, rest, explore and connect with the surroundings, with an approach to hospitality free of formalities or butler service.
Accommodation and shared spaces
The accommodation offering includes rooms such as the Pumphouse Top Floor Room With Bath, the Shorehouse Waterview Room With Bath and The Retreat. The property's listing presents these categories with their corresponding bath options and lake views.
The original manager's cottage has been transformed into the reception lounge, where guests can book e-bikes and massages, order hot sourdough, or relax by the fire and browse a selection of wilderness-themed items and gifts.
Inclusive dining and Tasmanian produce
Stays include breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a focus on Tasmanian produce. The dining room is presented as a carefully considered space where guests share the experience of the surroundings. The property also offers hosted dining experiences with local producers.
Experiences and activities
Pumphouse Point hosts a range of experiences for guests:
- Bushwalks along some of the most celebrated trails in Tasmania, Australia and the world, starting from Lake St Clair.
- Nature-based activities, including the use of e-bikes and trails through myrtle forests.
- Wine, dining and picnic experiences based on Tasmanian produce.
- Therapeutic and relaxation massages in a dedicated studio in the reception cottage.
- Chocolate tasting in partnership with House of Anvers, paired with local beverages.
- Whisky tasting in partnership with Sullivans Cove Whisky.
- A daily guided history tour, tracing the site's story from its industrial origins to its transformation into a wilderness retreat.
- Weddings and elopements, with support from the property's team and event specialists to tailor the celebration to the setting.
Architecture and industrial heritage
The design of the accommodation was developed by architecture firm CUMULUS STUDIO and is driven by the industrial character of the buildings. Very few changes have been made to the exterior, so the buildings retain their weathered appearance as they have for over seventy years. The interiors have been designed for simple, considered comfort, without hiding the buildings' origins as a former pumphouse.
The property takes responsibility for maintaining this industrial heritage for future generations and applies environmental stewardship principles arising from the lease of the site, in line with the minimal-impact and sustainability values of the World Heritage Area.
Setting and access
The property is located in the heart of Tasmania's wilderness, in the Central Highlands region, about two and a half hours' drive from Hobart or Launceston. The property is part of NRMA Parks and Resorts.
