About Teachers Health
Teachers Health: private health insurance for the Australian education sector
Teachers Health is an Australian private health fund established in 1954 by the NSW Teachers Federation with the aim of offering affordable health insurance to the education community. Since its foundation, when it had 2,600 members, it has grown to serve more than 400,000 people, making it, according to its own presentation, the largest industry-based fund in Australia.
The entity defines itself as a member-owned, not-for-profit fund. It states that for more than ten years it has returned to its members a proportion of benefits higher than the industry average.
Health products and other insurance
The Teachers Health catalogue is organised into several lines of cover:
- Health insurance: hospital cover, extras cover (services not included in hospitalisation), combined cover and emergency ambulance. There are specific options for families, couples and singles.
- Other insurance: travel insurance, home insurance, landlord insurance, car insurance and Overseas Visitor Health Cover.
The website also explains concepts such as the Medicare Levy Surcharge, the private health insurance rebate, Lifetime Health Cover and waiting periods.
Healthcare support services and programs
In addition to insurance products, Teachers Health offers healthcare support services to its members with hospital cover. These services include support before and after a hospital stay, chronic disease management, mental health support, weight loss programs and healthy lifestyle programs. The entity also publishes informative content on pregnancy, childbirth, health conditions and wellbeing, and offers telehealth consultations and a podcast series.
Health centres and provider network
Teachers Health has seven centres located around Australia providing dental and eyecare services, as well as a range of member offers. The website includes tools to find providers, specialists and hospitals, as well as to manage claims and reimbursement requests.
Membership and the education community
Members of unions working in public, private and independent primary and secondary schools, as well as tertiary institutions, can join. Administrative and support staff are also eligible. The entity extends membership to family members of people in the education community, including partners, children, siblings, parents and grandchildren, among others.
The company channels part of its resources to the education community through scholarships, sponsorships and research projects. It has a member rewards program that allows members to earn cashback on purchases and buy discounted gift cards.
Current offers and conditions
At the time of analysis, the website advertised a promotion of up to $650 in gift cards and the waiving of two- and six-month waiting periods on Extras services for new members who took out eligible Hospital & Extras cover or StarterPak (Basic Plus) before 31 October 2026. The promotion was subject to eligibility conditions and to maintaining cover for at least 30 days, with a successful direct debit payment. It also offered a $50 eGift card to members who referred a friend or family member who joined before the same date.
Travel insurance is marketed in collaboration with Allianz Global Assistance, which acts as agent for Allianz Australia Insurance Limited. Teachers Health operates as an authorised representative of AWP Australia Pty Ltd, the company that manages emergency medical assistance.
