About 1Cover

1Cover: travel insurance for Australian residents

1Cover is a travel insurance company that sells its policies in Australia. Its offering is structured into plans for international travel, domestic travel, cruises, skiing, senior travellers, families, groups and for those who are already overseas. The company presents itself as an option with comprehensive cover and industry recognition, and its website allows you to get quotes online.

Main plans and cover

The 1Cover catalogue includes international travel policies with cover for destinations such as New Zealand, the Pacific, Asia, the United States, Europe and other regions. It also offers domestic insurance for travel within Australia, including rental vehicle excess, and an annual multi-trip policy that covers unlimited domestic travel for a year. For travellers who are already outside Australia and forgot to take out insurance before departing, there is the 'Already Overseas' option, subject to specific age, residency and time limit conditions.

Featured cover includes 24/7 emergency medical assistance, 365 days a year; trip cancellation due to illness or a change of plans; baggage and personal effects up to AUD 15,000; rental vehicle excess; additional expenses due to trip interruption; credit card fraud; personal liability; and protection in the event of cancelled or delayed flights. The company also sells a specific cruise package, which includes medical cover and missed ports, and premium cover for winter sports and skiing.

Relevant conditions and limitations

Purchase is restricted to Australian residents. For the 'Already Overseas' policy, the applicant must be aged 69 or under, have permanent residency in Australia, intend to return to the country at the end of the trip, and must buy the policy within 5 days of departing Australia or of another policy expiring. The trip cannot exceed 15 consecutive months and each journey has a maximum of 90 days. There is no cover during the first 72 hours from the start of the policy and only one purchase is allowed every 12 months.

For travellers aged 80 or over, the maximum policy duration is 90 days. Domestic trips have a maximum cover of 93 days. No cover is offered for destinations with a 'do not travel' warning issued by the Australian Government. Travellers under 19 who are dependent children or grandchildren, not in full-time employment, can be included under certain conditions.

Assistance and policy management

The company offers emergency medical assistance worldwide, available 24 hours a day. For minor claims that only require a GP visit, the traveller can pay for the consultation and then submit the claim. 1Cover also provides online tools to manage policies, make changes and submit claims. The website includes policy documents (PDS), travel alerts and an FAQ section.
