About Specialist Medical Services Group

Specialist Medical Services Group: coordinated medical care across three Sydney centres

Specialist Medical Services Group (SMSG) is a Sydney-based healthcare group operating three medical centres: Earlwood Medical Centre, Bangor Medical Centre and Sans Souci Doctors. Its model is built on coordination between general practitioners, specialists and allied health professionals who work as independent practitioners within a single structure. The practice presents itself as an alternative to fragmented referrals: the GP acts as the central point, and specialists consult either on the same premises or within the group's network.

The group states that its history dates back to 1961 and that it has been established in Sydney since 2014, with more than a decade of continuous care. The organisation was a finalist in 2023 and a winner in 2024 of the CESPHN Primary Health Awards. It also states that it is accredited to national standards and certified in safety and quality.

The three centres and their care focus

Care is delivered from three locations in Sydney. Earlwood Medical Centre is the original centre and brings together family general practice, women's health, Sydney Cosmedic and the group's largest roster of specialists. Bangor Medical Centre, located in Bangor Shopping Centre, offers family medicine Monday to Friday and has multidisciplinary specialists and allied health professionals. Sans Souci Doctors, the bayside centre, concentrates Kids' Dr paediatrics, developmental assessment and a growing number of allied health professionals.

Independent practitioners choose which centre they consult at, and many work across two or three of the locations, giving patients flexibility over where they are seen. Coordination is supported by the GP maintaining continuity and specialists sharing the medical record within the group.

How it works for patients

Registration is per centre: patients complete their details before their first appointment at the centre they will be visiting, so that the reception team has the file ready. Once registered, they can book with any practitioner consulting at SMSG through the Automed system, the same one used by reception staff. Repeat prescriptions and referral renewals are handled per centre and, in most cases, do not require an appointment; the group states that requests are typically turned around within one business day.

Information on fees, billing and Medicare rebates is available in the patients section, along with the results policy and the procedures for scripts and referrals. The group also publishes a health library and resources on after-hours care and emergencies.

Awards and activity

The group reports more than 1,400 patient reviews across its services and a history dating back to 1961, with a presence in Sydney since 2014. In 2023 it was a finalist and in 2024 a winner of the CESPHN Primary Health Awards. It also states that it is accredited to national standards and certified in safety and quality. The organisation maintains a zero tolerance policy towards workplace violence.
