About University of Hartford
The University of Hartford (UHart) is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian university whose main campus sits at the meeting point of West Hartford, Hartford and Bloomfield, Connecticut. It combines a broad undergraduate and graduate curriculum with professional schools in music and the performing arts, engineering, architecture, business, education and the health professions. That range makes UHart a useful option for students who want a specific career path but also want a residential university with other academic disciplines nearby. The experience and cost can differ substantially by school and degree, so compare the program, audition or clinical requirements, scholarship offer and campus location together.
Programs: arts, engineering, health and more
UHart lists more than 100 undergraduate programs and 64 graduate programs. A few of its most distinctive areas are housed in specialized schools: the Hartt School offers music, dance and theatre training; the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture combines engineering and design; and the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions includes nursing, occupational therapy and other clinical pathways. Students can also choose from programs in business, visual arts, communication, sciences, humanities and social sciences. Examples include acoustical and aerospace engineering, architecture, biomedical engineering, music performance and production, nursing, physical therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, occupational therapy, psychology, business analytics and education. Studio, audition, lab and clinical expectations are not the same from one course of study to another. Check the program directory for the full list and use the department’s own instructions for auditions, prerequisites and professional placements.
Campus and instructional locations
- Main campus: 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117-1599. This 350-acre campus includes academic buildings, residence halls and student services; the university notes that the property extends across West Hartford, Hartford and Bloomfield.
- Asylum Avenue campus: 1265 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105. UHart’s current location guide identifies this as a separate site for its Montessori education program, Construction Institute and one Entrepreneurial Center location. Confirm the correct building and visitor access before going.
- Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center: 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford, CT 06112. This separate site supports performing arts education, including Hartt studios and performance spaces.
- Rocky Hill instructional site: Hanger Clinic, 31 Inwood Road, Suite C, Rocky Hill, CT. NECHE lists this location as part of UHart’s accredited instructional sites; ask the relevant program whether your coursework or clinical training takes place there.
The first three locations are university campuses or academic sites; the Rocky Hill address is a clinical instructional location. UHart also lists an Entrepreneurial Center at 222 Pitkin Street in East Hartford. These places are not interchangeable: ask where your required classes, rehearsals, labs, student services and clinical rotations are scheduled before arranging housing or transportation.
Tuition, scholarships and financial aid
For 2026–27, UHart estimates $67,416 in direct annual costs for a full-time undergraduate living on campus: $48,464 tuition, $3,444 fees, $9,013 housing and $6,495 meals. Books, transportation, personal expenses and loan fees add an estimated $4,998, bringing the published total cost of attendance to $72,414. The latter amount combines university-billed charges with indirect budget estimates, not an invoice. Actual costs vary with a student’s housing, enrollment, program fees and financial aid. See the university’s 2026–27 tuition and cost breakdown before comparing offers.
UHart reports that about 90 percent of its students receive financial aid and lists an average aid package of $30,600. Academic scholarships range from partial awards to full tuition for most majors; first-year applicants are considered during the admission review, without a separate scholarship application. Need-based grants, federal and state aid, loans, student employment and veterans benefits are also available, subject to eligibility. International students may be eligible for merit or performance scholarships but do not qualify for FAFSA-based need aid. The federal school code is 001422. Ask the Financial Aid Office how any award renews, what academic standing is required and whether a particular program adds fees; use the financial aid page and scholarship directory to check current terms.
What students say about the experience
Public student comments often praise accessible professors, a walkable and attractive campus, close relationships with classmates and strong instruction in areas such as music, engineering and architecture. Other reviewers describe frustration with housing maintenance, dining variety, advising or financial aid communication, the weekend social scene and the price compared with campus conditions. The difference between schools and student circumstances matters: a Hartt performance major, an engineering student and a commuter may have very different routines. During a visit, ask students in your intended program about class size, rehearsal or lab access, residence hall maintenance, meal options and how quickly offices resolve billing and advising questions. You can compare individual accounts on the student review page.
