About Wesley Theological Seminary
Wesley Theological Seminary is a private, nonprofit graduate school in Washington, DC, preparing students for Christian ministry, theological scholarship and faith-based leadership. Its Middle States accreditation is reaffirmed, and the seminary also holds accreditation through the Association of Theological Schools. Wesley’s programs are graduate and professional rather than undergraduate: applicants generally arrive with a bachelor’s degree, and some ministry or ordination tracks have additional requirements set by a denomination. Before applying, compare the degree format, admissions checklist and the expectations of the church body or profession you hope to serve.
Degrees and learning formats
The main degree choices are the Master of Divinity (MDiv), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Theological Studies (MTS) and Doctor of Ministry (DMin). The MDiv is designed for pastoral leadership, chaplaincy and preparation for ordination; Wesley describes in-person, online and hybrid routes, with supervised ministry and field education included in the formation. The MA has focused options connecting theology with areas such as public theology, faith and health, missional leadership, children and youth ministry, African American church studies, and theology and the arts. The MTS is a research-oriented foundation in scripture, history, ethics and theology, including pathways toward further graduate study. The DMin is a practice-focused doctorate for experienced ministry leaders; admission normally requires an MDiv or equivalent, a qualifying graduate record and ministry experience. Dual-degree pathways with American University connect theological study with public administration, public policy and international development. Check the current master’s program descriptions and the specific doctoral or dual-degree page for requirements and delivery format; tracks can change between academic years.
Tuition and ways to pay
For 2026–27, Wesley lists master’s tuition at $870 per credit hour, plus a $712 semester fee for most students (a reduced term fee applies to enrollment under four credits). The Doctor of Ministry rate is $774 per credit hour with a $76 term fee. A typical full-time MDiv or MA/MTS budget depends on the number of credits, housing, meals, books and transportation; the seminary’s published nine-month full-time master’s estimate is $38,174 before institutional or outside aid. Audit and continuing-education study have separate rates. Use Wesley’s current tuition and financial-aid page to calculate a plan for your credit load and living situation.
Wesley reports that about 90% of students receive institutional scholarships. Master’s merit awards are considered during admission without a separate scholarship form; the posted priority date for fall scholarship consideration is February 1. Eligible students may also use federal aid, including Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and the seminary notes that some limited need-based assistance, doctoral-track scholarship funding, veterans’ benefits, denominational support and work opportunities may be available. FAFSA and enrollment-level rules apply to federal aid, and loan rules for students starting in 2026–27 differ from legacy borrowing rules. Ask Financial Aid to explain the award, renewal conditions, remaining balance and any loan eligibility for your start year before making a commitment.
Applying and visiting
Application requirements and deadlines vary by degree and entry term. Master’s applicants submit transcripts, a personal statement, résumé and recommendations; the standard application fee may be waived for certain open-house attendees. Wesley posts early, priority and final deadlines on its admissions page, including a February 1 fall priority date for merit scholarships and some special opportunities. Prospective students can request information, schedule a conversation or attend a Window on Wesley event through the seminary’s admissions and application page. Applicants pursuing ordination should separately confirm denominational approval, coursework and candidacy steps with their conference or church authority.

The seminary does not publish one general public campus-hours schedule. What students say
The available student reviews are few, so they offer examples to investigate rather than a reliable campus-wide verdict. Several Niche reviewers praise knowledgeable, supportive professors and flexibility for students balancing study with work or family. A 2025 alum also described positive faculty relationships while recalling that food options were limited after campus dining changes during the pandemic. Because that comment describes a past period, ask current students what food and community services are available on the days you expect to be on campus. Recent workplace reviews raise different concerns about internal organization and communication; these are employee perspectives, not evidence about academic instruction. A useful next step is to speak with a current student in your intended degree and ask about advising, field placements, cohort support and the weekly demands of your chosen format. See the small set of graduate student comments alongside official program information.
Wesley may suit applicants seeking graduate theological study tied to ministry practice and access to Washington’s civic, church and nonprofit communities. The strongest comparison is program-specific: check accreditation and ordination fit, required in-person sessions, total credits, scholarship renewal terms, field-education expectations and the actual cost after aid. Start with the degree that matches your goal, then contact Admissions for a conversation about your background and timeline.
