About Tuskegee University
Tuskegee University is a private, nonprofit HBCU in Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. Founded by Booker T. Washington in 1881, it developed from a school for Black students into a university with programs in engineering, architecture, agriculture, business, education, nursing, veterinary medicine and the liberal arts. Its legacy is visible across campus: George Washington Carver’s work in agricultural science and the Tuskegee Airmen’s training are part of the institution’s history. Tuskegee is a strong option for students seeking an HBCU community and career-focused study, especially in engineering, agriculture, animal science or veterinary medicine. It is also a residential campus in a small Alabama city, so students should compare housing, student services and transportation needs alongside academics.
Programs and the veterinary pathway
Undergraduate majors include aerospace, chemical, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering; architecture; aviation science; animal, poultry and veterinary sciences; agribusiness; biology; computer science; nursing; social work; public health nutrition; education; business; communications; and the arts and sciences. The College of Veterinary Medicine is one of the university’s defining professional schools and offers the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), as well as graduate study in veterinary and biomedical sciences. Admission to the DVM program is separate from undergraduate admission and requires specific science preparation; prospective veterinarians should review prerequisite courses, application steps and the current accreditation information directly with the college. Tuskegee also offers graduate degrees across its academic schools and online programs. See the degree-program directory for the full current list and the university’s graduate-program pages for advanced study.
Campus, location and student life
The official GPS address is 1200 W. Montgomery Road, Tuskegee Institute, AL 36088; the main telephone is 334-727-8011. Google Maps labels the campus address as Tuskegee, Alabama. The main university listing shows Monday–Wednesday and Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Thursday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; and closed Saturday and Sunday. These are listing hours, not the schedule for every college, service or building. Arrange admissions meetings and tours before traveling. The campus map also identifies the main entrance, parking areas and the Daniel “Chappie” James Center, which helps visitors navigate a spread-out campus.
Student reviews often speak warmly about campus pride, the university’s history, friendly classmates and faculty, and a close community. Other comments raise practical concerns about housing availability and condition, dining, administrative communication and customer service. That mix is useful to weigh: ask current students about the specific residence halls and support offices you expect to rely on, and confirm housing arrangements early. The university says it has more than 100 student organizations, alongside campus traditions, athletics and academic groups.
2026–27 costs and scholarships
For 2026–27, the university lists full-time undergraduate tuition at $22,480 for the academic year (12–18 credits per semester). Its published on-campus undergraduate total is $39,160, including required fees, health insurance, e-books, standard double room, meal plan and renters insurance. Health insurance is listed as mandatory; students should check whether any exception applies to their situation rather than assuming they can waive it. Part-time, online, graduate and veterinary medicine schedules use different rates, and housing choices change the bill. Review the 2026–27 tuition and fees sheet and ask the Bursar for an itemized estimate.
Incoming freshmen may qualify for renewable merit aid. The university lists a Distinguished Presidential Scholarship covering tuition, room and board, fees and a $300 e-book voucher for applicants meeting the published GPA and test-score criteria; renewal requires a 3.5 GPA and 30 earned hours. The University Merit Scholarship covers full tuition and a $300 e-book voucher, while the University Achievement award covers up to half of tuition. The Tuskegee University Grant and Alabama Incentive Grant are also listed for qualified students; the latter is restricted to Alabama residents. The standard-admission scholarships are competitive and subject to funds, and applicants must meet deadlines and renewal rules. The scholarship page gives separate instructions and dates by entry year; confirm the correct cycle, including whether a separate scholarship application is required. Submit the FAFSA to be considered for federal aid and review the university’s scholarship and financial-aid information before relying on an award estimate.
Applying and planning a visit
Freshman applicants submit the online application, a $25 nonrefundable application fee, official high-school transcript, SAT or ACT scores and a recommendation letter through the application portal. Tuskegee lists term deadlines for summer, fall and spring, and encourages early submission so admission and scholarship review can be completed in time. Transfer, graduate and veterinary medicine applicants follow different requirements. Start through the university’s admissions application portal; prospective visitors can use its campus map and directions to plan arrival. Main campus address: 1200 W. Montgomery Road, Tuskegee Institute, AL 36088. The university’s official social accounts include Facebook and Instagram.
