About Zell Miller Scholarship — Georgia Student Finance Commission

Zell Miller is the more academically demanding route within Georgia’s HOPE scholarships. For students at an eligible high school, the commission lists two main paths: graduate as valedictorian or salutatorian and meet the remaining HOPE requirements, or reach a state-calculated Zell Miller GPA of 3.7 along with a qualifying standardized-test score. Rigorous courses are also reviewed; a school’s cumulative GPA does not replace the state calculation.

At participating public colleges, the scholarship covers standard tuition up to the approved credit-hour limit; private institutions use a different approved amount. It should not be read as automatic coverage of housing, meals, books, transportation or every campus fee. GAfutures publishes award tables by term and campus, and the financial-aid office can explain an individual calculation and how renewal works when college grades change.

Students apply through the annual FAFSA or GSFAPP, and the institution verifies eligibility. HOPE’s deadline is the last day of the term or withdrawal date, whichever comes first, although a college may have earlier steps. Georgia provides the My High School HOPE GPA tool, and its contact center is 800-505-4732, option 1. If a student is near the cutoff, ask a counselor to review rigor courses, reported grades and possible data errors before assuming the report-card GPA matches the state figure.

In brief

More selective merit award than HOPE; at eligible public colleges it covers standard tuition based on approved hours
